John Mitchell Henry

John Henry was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to John and Hazel Henry — a true child of the baby‑boomer era. His father served in the military during World War II, and that legacy shaped him deeply. Following in those footsteps, he began his military service in the U.S. Army at age 18 during the Vietnam era and later continued his distinguished career in the United States Air Force. Over the course of his service, he was stationed in the United States, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and Sicily. He gave 22 years of his life faithfully serving his country. After his military years, John devoted his life to God and spent 31 years as a missionary to Thailand, a place and people he loved dearly. His missionary work was filled with remarkable stories of faith and courage. In one unforgettable moment, he was shot at while protecting a battered woman from an abusive man. He risked his life to rescue a distressed man who had wandered into a highway. Several times, people threatened to shoot him simply for speaking about the Gospel of Jesus. Even in danger, John remained steadfast in his faith and unwavering in his commitment to do what was right. Throughout his ministry, he founded a Thai Bible school, established two radio broadcasts, taught Biblical theology classes, and helped plant several churches. He served and cared for the poor and the needy—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He opened his home, gave up his own bed, shared his food, his time, his labor, and his money — whatever was needed. Even after retiring, he never stopped caring for Thailand and continued helping however he could. John was a devoted husband, father, and man of faith. He was married to Sue Henry for 32 years, and together they devoted their marriage to serving God in Thailand. He had a daughter, Twila Henry and lovingly adopted Chumpion, Psalm, and Song. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched through his ministry, his kindness, and his example. If one word could summarize him, it would be servant — a servant of God and of others. John was survived by his wife Sue Henry and their daughters Psalm Henry Disher and Song Henry Thurman and survived by his son John C. Henry, and daughter Twila Henry Chitty by his first wife Saiyohn Komsonthia Stewart; and his grandchildren, Evan Henry, Kayla Chanda, John Chitty, Deborah Chitty, Drew Disher, and Ariel Thurman.
